Early telephone systems were merely local party-line type operations, connected by a local operator who usually performed the service from a switchboard located in the operator’s home. Early phones required local battery power since there were no “central office” facilities to provide either line or ringing voltages to the field. A call was instituted by cranking a magneto in or near to the local phone. The operator would then respond and connect the call to the call recipient’s phone. Most phone wiring was based on existing telegraph technology. The Western Electric Model 21 wall phone, pictured above, is an example of an early battery powered phone that was placed into service in

One Vandam Penthouse A Location: Completed winter Description: We were brought on in the early stages of the project, resulting in a close collaboration with BKSK Architects, Stribling, Quinlan Development Group and Tavros Development Partners throughout all aspects of the design. Each of the parties brought great resources and ideas to the project. As the space evolved, it was very clear that this would be a special apartment.
The design objective for the project was to create a modern environment that draws from the character of the surrounding neighborhoods. The building is sophisticated and vertical, with details that are tactile and at a scale that is very personal. American craftsmanship, particularly the work of designers such as Edward Wormley, Paul McCobb, and Harvey Probber, was our inspiration throughout the process of designing Penthouse A.
One of the main design goals behind Penthouse A was to keep the space feeling light but with rich and natural materials. The finishes throughout were created keeping this in mind. The stone was honed, the tiles hand-glazed, the cabinetry and floor finishes were customized and crafted specifically for One Vandam. The triplex staircase creates a spectacular centerpiece for the Penthouse, taking advantage of the triple-height space and creating a dramatic effect.
Additionally, sculptural furniture and luxurious textiles were sourced to further elevate the space. We partnered with modern craftspeople to create custom finishes and carry on the tradition of thoughtful design.
Antique Furniture Valuations
Screws are relative newcomers to the production of furniture primarily because they are so hard to make by hand. But as the complexity and sophistication of furniture increased in the late 17th century and the use of brass hardware, locks and concealed hinges became more popular, there was an obvious need for a fastener that could hold two surfaces together without having to penetrate the back surface of the second piece.
The screw on the left was handmade in the late 18th century.

They were an absolute mess when I purchased them and look much better now. I will include a lot of pictures. They are maple, and the front of each drawer is a solid plank of maple, but I can’t say that they are “matched” planks. I have seen some pretty swirls and birds eye features on the drawer fronts. I have noticed circular saw marks on the side of the drawers and other black diagonal marks on the front of the drawers that I wonder if its from a ripsaw? Also what is the construction method called when they sort of board and batten the sides and back – I can’t remember the term.

Some concentration was placed on specialty offices in factories or laboratories, for which they already produced more conventional furniture.
